چکیده

The study investigates the vulnerability of vegetation over Africa to El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events using the moving window statistical correlation analysis technique. The correlation analysis was done betweenNormalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data fromAdvanced VeryHigh Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and an ENSO index, namely Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI). The study develops a new monitoring approach (ENSO vulnerability assessment system) to quantify the relationships between monthly maximum NDVI anomalies and their month-to-month correlations with the ENSO indices for the vegetative land areas of Africa. The data used in this study was for the period 1982–2006. The newmonitoring approach was used in the assessment of the long-time vegetation sensitivity to the ENSO warm events that occurred during the study period. A map of Africa indicating the vegetation vulnerability to ENSO is produced. Different areas of vegetation vulnerability are identified within the main vegetation cover classes. For the African vegetative land, 16% of the total area was characterized by moderate vulnerability of vegetation to El-Niño, whereas 1.18% showed high vulnerability. Results suggest that the vulnerability of vegetative land surfaces across Africa to climate extremes, such as ENSO depends considerably on the vegetation type. In particular, results show that areas of equatorial rainforest are more resistant to drought stress than the wooded and non-wooded vegetation categories. 2009 Elsevier B.V. Exploring relationships between ENSO and vegetation vigour in the south-east USA using AVHRR data

This research explores the relationship between El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), captured by equatorial PaciŽ c Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and interannual variation in vegetation vigour in the southeast USA, captured by Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized DiVerence Vegetation Index (NDVI), for the period 1982–1992. The moving average and ‘baseline’ methods ...

Vegetation Greenness in Northeastern Brazil and Its Relation to ENSO Warm Events

The spatio-temporal variability of trends in vegetation greenness in dryland areas is a well-documented phenomenon in remote sensing studies at global to regional scales. The underlying causes differ, however, and are often not well understood. Here, we analyzed the trends in vegetation greenness for a semi-arid area in northeastern Brazil (NEB) and examined the relationships between those dyna...

Global responses of terrestrial productivity to contemporary climatic oscillations.

The terrestrial biosphere is subjected to a wide range of natural climatic oscillations. Best known is the El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO) that exerts globally extensive impacts on crops and natural vegetation. A 50-year time series of ENSO events has been analysed to determine those geographical areas that are reliably impacted by ENSO events. Most areas are impacted by changes in precipit...

Climate-disease connections: Rift Valley Fever in Kenya.

All known Rift Valley fever(RVF) outbreaks in Kenya from 1950 to 1998 followed periods of abnormally high rainfall. On an interannual scale, periods of above normal rainfall in East Africa are associated with the warm phase of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Anomalous rainfall floods mosquito-breeding habitats called dambos, which contain transovarially infected mosquito egg...

The Control of Meridional Differential Surface Heating Over the Level of ENSO Activity: A Heat-Pump Hypothesis

Numerical experiments with a coupled model have been carried out to test the heat-pump hypothesis for ENSO. The hypothesis states that the level of ENSO activity is controlled by the meridional differential surface heating over the Pacific: either an enhanced surface heating over the equatorial region or an enhanced cooling over the subtropical/extratropical ocean may result in a regime with st...
